Analysis of
Pop Videos 1
One Direction - What
Makes You Beautiful
Cinematography
This is the
first close up of the singers; this close up allows the singers to present
himself to the audience therefore making a connection between each other. A
close up shot like this of the singer is key in a pop music video as it
establishes the singers with the song and makes the audience believe that these
lyrics are coming from that individual; this should normally be used in the
first part of the video as you want the connection straight away.
This is
also very typical of a pop music video, This is an establishing; this shot is used
to show the audience where the music video will be taking place, the setting.
From this shot along you can already tell that the song is going to be very
upbeat and energetic due to them being in a different country, on holiday; this
links back to the audience as the younger girls will want this type of holiday,
the sun and beach.
Sound
To start
with the music itself is very upbeat and happy, this is very typical of a pop
music video. The 5 singers in this music video are singing to girls who don't
know their ''beautiful'' so this would mean that they are being kind and happy,
this part intertwines with the feel of the song itself, you could say this pop
song is mainly aimed at young girls around the age 12-17 due to the lyrics and
music. Their voices are high and innocent therefore makes it more appealing to
younger girls who are interested in boy pop bands.
Mise en scene
This is a
great shot for using mise en scene in this pop video, this is all down to the
fun and playful feel it has because everyone is playing around on a log, this
links back to the target audience as they will either still be doing these sort
of things or have clear memories of it. As you can see that there is a
football, girls and a fallen tree, this tells the audience that they are about
to do something and have some fun on the beach, you can guess this by the lack
of any adults which would try to control them; this also relates back to the
targeted audience as they will not want to be controlled by the adults and just
have fun with their friends. The setting itself represents what they feel
emotionally, bright and colourful people. This shot is great for getting across
a lot of information with just the mise en scene, as well as being a very
typical shot chosen within this genre. In this genre it is all about having
fun, this shot shows that clearly as collectively they are doing all the things
that teenagers like doing.
This
final image for the mise en scene is really good for this music video, as all the
members are present so before they start singing we already know who will be,
they are up high above the sea on a cliff near the edge showing that they are
not fazed by the dangers which comes with having fun, this relates to the
audience, this is because they are having fun no matter what could happen; this
is just like what teenagers think.
Editing
There has
been a use of tube chop in the music video from 1:10 – 1:12. This would have
been used as it gets a lot of information in a very short space of time, it
also allows this part to be expressed as happy and livelier due to the fast
paced cuts, and this is supported by what is actually shown in the clip of them
getting ready for some fun.
Performance
The performance is linked with
the song as they are very energetic, fun and upbeat. In this clip we see
everybody having fun and running about which is very effective for the
performance as it livens the setting up and changes the way the audience sees
the setting and the singers. The performance also links in with the mise en scene as
before they arrive it was a calm and quiet setting, but after it was colourful,
vibrant and exciting. This also relates to the audience as it shows them that
they can change the mood of a place and have the ability to bring their
personalities to an area. They show how to change a slow paced area to a fast
paced one.
