Analysis of Pop Videos 2

Analysis of Pop Videos 2

Justin Bieber - One Time

Cinematography

This is first shot we see; this is a basic mid shot with no use of rule of thirds. This introduces the singer in a house with his friend. This shot connects with his intended audience as they have things in common with him, playing video games with friends as well as talking on his mobile phone and then setting up a party. This connection is set up right at the beginning as this is the best time to do it and it very typical for this genre to do this. This shot is also used as the establishing shot as you can clearly see the setting in the background which the rest of the music video will be taking place.

This is a close up of the artist which is now singing the song, towards the audience. This is also building the connection between the audience and the artist, as he is now singing the song he is building the relationship for the song instead of himself. By doing this he is showing that there is emotion behind the lyrics and that the lyrics are what he believes in.

Sound

The music is very high pitched and upbeat, as well as the artist’s voice, this is very typical of a pop music video. The artist is singing about a girl, that she is the only one for him and that he loves her. These lyrics show that the artist is being kind and happy, this links to the song itself as this has also got a happy vibe to it and would appeal to mainly girls and some boys at around 15-19 of age. The artist voice is very high and innocent which will appeal to the targeted audience.

Mise en scene

This shot shows that they are at the artist’s party and having a great time, you can see this by the shot being full of people as well as them all laughing and being happy. This would appeal and connect to the audience as people at this age like to party and want them.

This is a great shot for Mise en scene as it shows everyone laughing and smiling as well as everyone playing with silly string, this really links to the target audience. This shows everyone being together and having fun which the pop genre is all about. The younger audience can really connect to this as they will have played with it one day. There is also a lack of any adults in this which shows that the kids choose what they do and they will have as much fun as possible. They have also tried to connect with the older side of their targeted audience in this shot as they used dark colours and have set a party atmosphere which will connect with those who go out partying in clubs. There is a clear change in the setting from the beginning to the end as although it is the same place they have changed it so that it looks darker and more rebels partying.

Editing

In this music video the editing is reasonably quick but especially at 2:40 – 2:48 where it flicks through different shots. The use of this is to make it look more fun and enjoyable, as well as building up the tension for happens afterwards. This is typical for a pop video as they use this to make the video more fun and exciting to connect to the young audience.

Performance

The performance is linked with the song as they are both very energetic and fun. In this clip we can see everybody having fun and laughing at what they are doing. This is very effective for the performance as it livens the dark setting up and makes it more exciting to watch as well as changing the way the audience sees the setting and artist. The performance also shows the audience that they can have a sensible party at home.
