Analysis of Rock Videos 1
Linkin Park - Numb
Cinematography
This are very good shots for the cinematography of a rock video, the
first one we have is a long shot which shows the whole band playing the song,
this is very typical of a rock video as they believe that the music is
everything and they want their audience to see this.
This
medium shot of the band shows that the music is important but due to the singer
being in the middle, he is the main focus point showing us that he is the more
important one to watch. Although the other band members are in this shot, you
are drawn to look at the singer, this may be because he is the more important
one.
This shot
is also very conventional of a rock band video, this is because it is a single
shot of one of the members who is not the main singer but playing a different
role in the band but important, which are the drums. This is a great shot to
use for a rock video as the rock audience can build up a connection with
someone else in the band apart from the singer, especially when many of the
audience loves the drums, by doing this it is keeping all the members of the
band in the video and ensuring that they are not forgotten about.
Sound
The audio
in this music video starts off as an instrumental as well as being very slow,
it then builds up and then develops into a fast pace song with lots of
instruments as well as the powerful voice of the artist. This is very
conventional of a rock song, this is to build up the tension within the song,
it makes it more effective and suits the build up of the pace within the video.
We hear the singer himself singing along with the band in the background which
is obviously important to have in a music video. The band starts off playing
slow with only one instrument but after it builds up the pace and amount of
instruments.
Mise en
scene
In this shot it captures the Mise en scene of all the band members and the band. This is very conventional of a rock band, to have lots of dark and dull colours, this would show the darker side of their personalities; this could also show that the band is untied with the same dress sense. You can clearly see all the instruments that they play, this is also very conventional of a rock video as it shows the audience that they can play and loves their instruments; this will connect to the audience.
In the background we can see very dark props such as the candles which show the audience that they are darker than most people, this is added to the setting of the video which is in a church which is very conventional place as many people think of churches like this to me dark and mysterious as well as death.
Editing
The editing in this rock music video seems to be rather slow and dragged out but in some places are really quick which is very conventional of this genre and very effective as it is fast paced so we get to see all the different shots in a short space of time as well as being introduced to the band quickly. The editing links with the actual song as they both are rather slow but have parts which have quick outbursts.
Performance
The performance is very conventional for a rock music video, it isn’t full of energetic dance moves or happy smiley faces, compared to pop music videos they are the opposite. It has a balance to it, of the band being shown as playing the instruments and the woman feelings. They are all performing to the mood of the song which is slow, dragged out and angry.
